May felt so long! Why did May feel so long? I worked on this blog quite a lot this month - added stats to my daily photos, added EXIFs for new photos, redesigned the main navigation and rebuilt search. I love doing mini-projects like that.
I managed to keep my daily photo streak going. Got pretty close a couple of times though!
I replaced the keyboard I broke in April, picked up the denim jacket Charlotte got me for my birthday, spent the day with Tabitha whilst Charlotte was at Slam Dunk festival, got last-minute tickets to New Found Glory, and saw Frankie and the Witch Fingers. That's the highlights, but I took quite a lot of pictures I was happy with, and wrote about some interesting developery stuff that is probably not that interesting, actually! Maybe the whole month is worth a scroll.
new heaven shall burn - never really been into them before but enjoyed this a lot. via Sven
new johnny booth. Love Johnny Booth - they scratch the phantom itch Every Time I Die left when they quit.
new loathe. I always enjoy Loathe but I never put them on. There's so much music.
new house of protection. Got tickets to see them this month; apparently their live show is pretty wild.
dvne live session. These guys were amazing live, and this is a brilliant quality recording. Also bought the FLACs off Bandcamp.
never heard hot milk before but they played Slam Dunk so I gave them a listen and the new record sounds good. The old one is also pretty fun.
new lorna shore. Will Ramos makes some weird noises.
the amity affliction did a couple of covers I like on triple-j
new holy fawn is sounding pretty huge. Another one I like a lot but never think to put on.
anticipation is high for new chevelle. I don't think they've done an album I didn't enjoy.
the armed sounding chaotic again, which is welcome. I liked their electronic/pop stuff but it got old quite fast.
We are big fans of Andrew, Stephen, and Adam in this house and I am very pleased that they're back together. Their fried rice video made me crave fried rice, but I think I have an unachievable idea of it in my head.
Vin Tra talks to Brian Scotto about car culture
I spent a lot of time thinking about this video, and ended up writing a pretty insufferable comment on it.
Brian touched on the real problem right there at the end in a throwaway comment: "I don't even know what I like any more". That's what social media destroys. We spend so much time looking at things other people are doing that it ruins our own personal culture.
When you were getting a magazine every month that showed you what other people were doing, you had no choice but to do your own thing. But now we're constantly bombarded with hype-train content that our taste gets homogenised and it's not even really our taste any more. You can't fully visualise or realise your own projects because they're too coloured by the collective taste. That Quattro is the absolute embodiment of that.
Great video. Given me a lot to think about.
how to throw a football with Tom Brady. Love that Tom Brady is on YouTube now. He's done a couple of videos with Veritasium now and I liked both.
The LEGO F1 drivers parade was so fun. I hope they do something like this at Silverstone. They won't, but I hope they do.
These ghost lap visualisers are so cool, and the max/lando miami one is a brilliant example of how close it gets.
One of the nicest Supras. I would love to drive one of these one day.
It's hard to believe this flying car is anything other than a render, but it is apparently real and I would also like to drive one of these.
speeed spends 30 days doing viral health trends, and there's not many people I would watch doing this but Pumphrey is one of them. Loved this video, and he made such an insightful comment:
perfect is usually someone else's idea of what you should be anyway
Some cool stuff I hadn't heard of in Raz' indie games video.
Interesting story of where grep came from. Hard to imagine editing text files like this!
they also had one grave disadvantage: none of them was Ken Thompson
Crossover I never expected (but should have because I enjoyed Linus' videos on the build of his badminton centre): badminton insight and linus. I want to go here one day, but I can't justify going to Canada to play badminton poorly! Their tour video is worth a watch, too, if you're into that sort of thing.
It's long, but NakeyJakey's video on trying to get good at Counter Strike was super enjoyable. I love watching this guy talk about gaming.
3d printing guns is still terrifying.
There's a Wes Anderson exhibition at the Design Museum but tickets are so expensive for a museum.
It's fun reading a judge tearing Apple a new one. What a mess.
StarVaders looks like a great game I would not enjoy playing.
Polygon got sold to Valnet and I guess that's the end of Polygon.
Three Panel Soul was one of the first webcomics I really got into, and I'm glad they're writing it again. This one on releasing software made me laugh and then want to cry.
AI is apparently making some people have god-delusions. Can't see any potential future issues with this.
I love when Wondermark is pure silliness. Fits the illustration aesthetic so well.
Ferrari soiled their sheets so badly in Miami, and Defector wrote about it.
Our CI setup at work makes it difficult to trigger deploys when I'm out and about. Since I'm a gatekeeper of our production branches, I sometimes need to be able to deploy from my phone but there's not really a great way to do that. Working Copy on iOS is a brilliant solution, even if the UI is a bit unclear at times.
I used WhenAvailable to create a calendar-based poll for an F1 Fwiends meetup when we were having trouble finding a date. It worked really well but it made me want to make my own because I think I can do it better.
MCON Kickstarter came and went. I would love one of these but I don't know how much use I'd get out of it, and I don't like backing Kickstarters.
Kojima has an idea for a Forgetting Game, but I have this problem with so many games. Would love it if they had a "it's been months since you played this - would you like a reminder?", because it puts me off returning to games I've lapsed on.
New Mavic 4 Pro looks amazing. So expensive.
I love the idea of the High Line in New York, and Zurich has one now. I want to go.
I got shown this guy's videos on YouTube before I saw this article. It was a weird coincidence. I've found blackjack card counting interesting for a while, and the lengths that casinos will go to to stop people doing it should make everyone want to stop going to casinos forever.
This Omega Railmaster is so beautiful
Luke writes weirdly passionately about garlic salt and it's very funny.
I would love a telescope, but I always end up talking myself out of it because I want one I can attach my camera to and that just doesn't seem to be a thing that's worth doing. I would love to look at Saturn, though. That sort of thing always makes me feel existential.
Normally I would have nothing to do with memcoins or Trump on here, but this interview with someone who shorted $TRUMP to get to the top-20 dinner was a good read.
Stray From the Path kept their new record secret, then surprise-released it. I love their reasons for doing this. I don't like the current trend of spending 6 months drip-feeding singles, but I've always been a whole-album guy at heart (yes I know I share a lot of links to singles here 🤫).
That'll do for this month, I think. My arm is hurting. Have a great June, and I'll see you in the best month!
